“Let’s share it”: Karl’s wild idea to save the Brisbane Olympics

Karl Stefanovic has become the unlikely face of a good idea, pitching a revolutionary way to save the Brisbane Olympics from disaster.

The 2032 games will be the first time Australia has hosted the event since Sydney in 2000, with hundreds of thousands of people expected to make the pilgrimage to the sunshine state to watch their favourite sports.

Despite the building excitement for the games, the Queensland government has copped backlash in recent weeks over the preparations for the event, after Premier Steven Miles announced he would bin a $3.4 billion plan to build a new inner-city stadium in Victoria Park in time for the Olympics.

Instead, the premier plans to use the exisiting Suncorp Stadium to host the opening and closing ceremonies, while the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre will host the athletics events.

Today host and Brisbane native Karl Stefanovic has labelled the plan as a “seismic international embarrassment” and in a strange turn of events, even offered up a good suggestion for how to fix it.

“So how about we share the Olympics across the country, opening ceremonies in all the major already existing stadiums, events split among world-class facilities and the rest of the events showcasing this great country to the world,” he said.

“We’ll have the triathlon on the Gold Coast, the cycling in Far North Queensland, the surfing at Bells Beach, the marathon past Uluru, the shooting in Longreach, it could be a magnificent two-week tourism ad for this country, leaving a legacy that’s cheaper."

“Our athletes deserve the very best, so if Queensland can’t do it, let’s share it. ”

It seems Karl isn't the only one up in arms over the decision to not build a new stadium, as a group of high-profile Aussie Olympians penned an open letter to the premier, imploring him to "revisit the decision".

The letter states, "We all remember the magnificent event that Sydney put on in 2000. Queensland deserves something equally spectacular, without a centrepiece that would reek of compromise."

The letter was signed by 14 current and former Australian Olympians including Grant Hackett, Sally Pearson, Leisel Jones and more.

"Hopefully it's permanent": Karl's surprise holiday replacement announced

Karl Stefanovic's Christmas leave replacement on the Today show was announced on Monday, when it was revealed that Dr Nick Coatsworth, Australia's former deputy chief medical officer, would be filling Stefanovic's hosting shoes from December 26, granting the veteran host a well-deserved New Year's rendezvous with his family.

However, the digital realm erupted with mixed emotions following the news, with some online users not just celebrating Stefanovic's temporary absence but actively calling for the replacement to be made permanent.

Social media platforms buzzed with comments like, 'Please make it a permanent break', and 'Complete overhaul needed', suggesting a desire for a fresh face at the helm of the popular morning show. One disgruntled user even quipped, 'Hopefully it is permanent; the only one who thinks he is funny is him. Poor co-hosts with their fake laughs.'

As the summer breeze of change swept through the Today show, co-host Sarah Abo found herself replaced for the holiday season by regular Today show reporter Mia Glover, adding an extra layer of anticipation to the show's temporary makeover.

The real thunderstorm, however, came with the surprising decision to appoint Dr Coatsworth as the temporary host. A prominent figure in the medical field, Coatsworth had been a regular contributor to Channel Nine, particularly on matters of medicine.

Reports surfaced of disquiet among viewers, claiming 'plenty of noses are out of joint' over this unconventional choice. This sentiment likely stems from the fact that Dr Coatsworth, despite his frequent appearances as the show's medical expert during the pandemic, has never before taken on the role of the show's host.

Dr Coatsworth also has a new show in the pipeline titled Do You Want to Live Forever?, set to be broadcast on Nine next year. This unexpected move only adds to the intrigue surrounding the doctor's stint as a morning show host.

This shakeup comes at a critical juncture for the Today show, as its arch-rival, Sunrise, gears up for its 20th year of dominating the breakfast ratings war. According to the 2022 OzTam survey, Sunrise boasted an average national daily audience of 397,000 viewers, proudly claiming to be '31 per cent bigger than its nearest competitor.' Today, on the other hand, has struggled in recent years to close the gap with Sunrise, facing challenges exacerbated by a revolving door of presenters on the Nine show.

Images: Nine

"It's still there": Karl Stefanovic breaks silence on feud with Michael Clarke

Karl Stefanovic has broken his silence on the status of his friendship with Michael Clarke, almost one year after their infamous brawl made headlines.

In December last year while on holiday in Noosa, the Today host and the former Aussie cricketer came to blows as Clarke was at the centre of a blazing row with his ex-girlfriend Jade Yarbrough and her brother-in-law Stefanovic in a public park.

The expletive-ridden fight made headlines, with both men keeping relatively quiet about what eventuated from the argument.

Now, Stefanovic has broken his silence on The Kyle and Jackie O Show, as Kyle Sandilands asked what the status of their friendship was.

"Have you reconciled with Michael Clarke yet, your personal self, regardless of the sisters [Jade and Jasmine Yarbrough]?" Kyle asked Karl live on air.

"Kyle, it's like a sticker. You rip it off but it's still there," Karl said, revealing peace had not yet been brokered between the pair.

"There's still a bit of stick," Jackie O said, and Karl confirmed she was correct.

"Is that like one of those stickers they put on your car when you're parked in a No Standing spot and you can't get that bastard off, when you try to pick away?" Kyle asked.

"Yeah. That is really, really deep," Karl agreed with a laugh.

Karl's admission comes just weeks after Michael Clarke told his side of the story on A Current Affair for the first time.

In the interview with Ally Langdon, Clarke began by acknowledging the complexities of handling personal matters in the public eye.

He explained, "A lot of people are involved, you know, there's other families, there's friends. I think it's always important that you do your best to try and respect that as well."

While dodging questions about the specifics of the argument, Clarke admitted to making mistakes, saying, "I've made, ah, I've made some mistakes, I haven't made mistakes. Michael Clarke breaks silence on THAT stoush in Noosa with Karl Stefanovic

In a candid interview on A Current Affair, former Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke has broken his silence regarding a distressing incident involving his then-girlfriend, Jade Yarbrough, which circulated online earlier this year.

The altercation took place in Noosa in January, and since then, Clarke has maintained a resolute silence about the incident.

Clarke began by acknowledging the complexities of handling personal matters in the public eye. He explained, "A lot of people are involved, you know, there's other families, there's friends.

"I think it's always important that you do your best to try and respect that as well. So a lot of the time throughout my career I've asked to not speak about my personal life, or I've tried not to talk about it, which has probably been to the detriment of me at some stages because I think the public have wanted to know and the fact I haven't spoken, you know, might look like there's something to hide or 'why can't he just talk about it?' But it's not just about me - like I say, you are trying to respect everyone that's involved."

The incident in Noosa involved a confrontation with Jade Yarbrough, who is the sister of Karl Stefanovic's wife, Jasmine. Accusations of an affair between Clarke and a former lover escalated into a heated exchange.

In the video, tensions ran high with Clarke and Yarbrough hurling expletives at each other. Even Today show host Karl Stefanovic found himself at the receiving end of Clarke's ire.

In his recent appearance on A Current Affair as an ambassador for Australian Bitters, Clarke discussed the challenges of dealing with public and media scrutiny. He stated, "Sometimes it's out of control as well, you know, sometimes unless I stay in my house 24/7, that's the only way I keep control of it."

The interview also delved into the incident in Noosa, with the interviewer, Simon Bouda, asking Clarke about any regrets from that time. To this, Clarke replied, "No... listen, I'm here to talk about lemon, lime, and bitters."

He emphasised that speaking about personal matters often overshadowed the purpose of his appearances, and he didn't want his experiences to overshadow the brand he was endorsing.

The conversation continued to highlight the challenges of fame and the constant public scrutiny faced by sports figures. Clarke admitted to making mistakes, saying, "I've made, ah, I've made some mistakes, I haven't made mistakes. I've spoken about them, I haven't spoken about them.

"For me, again, I think the most important thing is that you get out of bed every day and try and do your best. I'm not here to blame anyone, I'm not here to blame me. I'm here to learn. I think that's the key; we're all still learning, we're all still trying our best, and yeah, relationships are tough."

Despite the challenges and controversies he's faced, Clarke has moved forward with a new venture, serving as an ambassador for the Australian startup Australian Bitters as it explores opportunities for global expansion. Business development manager Jeremy Allen expressed confidence in the timing of their expansion, citing Clarke's involvement as an essential element of their strategy.

In a world where personal matters often collide with the public sphere, Clarke's open discussion about the complexities of fame and relationships sheds light on the struggles faced by individuals in the public eye. His role as an ambassador for Australian Bitters signifies a new chapter in his life, where he's focused on learning from the past while embracing the opportunities that the future holds.

Image: A Current Affair

I can’t answer that.”

Stefanovic laughed and said: “Good deflection.”

The ambassador played along and said: “Your daughter must be so mad at you right now. Karl's mum steals the show on Today

Karl Stefanovic's mum has stolen the show on Today after she called in to offer some health advice.

The Today panel were discussing tick bites on Friday morning, consulting Dr Nick Coatsworth earlier in the show about how to remove them, with the doctor saying you must remove the tick around the head, as well as any pincers to reduce the risk of reactions and inflammation.

After consulting Dr Coatsworth, Karl's mum Jenny joined the conversation via video link to ask some advice from a parents point of view.

"So, let's go to Dr J now, AKA my mum, Jenny from the block," Karl joked before introducing his mum on the show.

"I had a big argument with you at the start of the year about all this, when I pulled a tick out of a cousin and you got very cranky at me, so what is your solution?"

"I got cranky, because you didn't know if it was a tick and I saw it and said it was a tick and my suggestion is, if you can't get it out right from the head, like Nick the doctor [said], you need to go to the doctor and get it all out," she said.

"I said if you leave the head in it can cause infections and you can get all those sort of weird tick diseases these days."

"Jenny knows what she's talking about," Today co-host Sarah Abo said.

"Before we go Dr J, where do you think you went wrong with me as a parent?" Karl questioned his mum as his co-hosts giggled.

"Did you leave a tick inside your own son, Jenny?" Sarah joked.

"We got them," Karl quipped as his mum added that he didn't get too many.

Jenny added that you need to put some alcohol on the area where the tick was after pulling it out at the head, with Karl joking, "And that's where my love of alcohol came from!"

"It all makes sense now," Sarah added.

Karl's sister-in-law and co-host of Today Extra Sylvia Jeffreys said with a laugh, "The best part of that was the way she very carefully dodged that question about where it all went wrong, Karl!"

"And thanks for revisiting that one, Sylvie," he responded.

"Couldn't help it!" she quipped.

Karl addresses cringeworthy Kochie joke at the Logies

Karl Stefanovic has addressed his awkward joke at the Logies on Sunday night, which was aimed at long-running breakfast TV rival David Koch.

While presenting an award at the ceremony, Stefanovic took to opportunity to rip into Kochie with the ad-libbed joke, which left the audience more bewildered than entertained.

It started when Kochie confessed his fondness for the third season of Stan series Bump while speaking to the star-studded audience.

Seizing the moment, Stefanovic took a comedic leap, playing on the double entendre of "bump", a term colloquially associated with cocaine.

"I want to just check something... I am pretty sure before I heard Kochie say he loves Bump's... season three. Did anyone mishear that? Because I am pretty sure I did."

"Anyway, those are the headlines tomorrow morning..." Stefanovic remarked, hoping for a laugh, while cameras panned to Kochie who looked utterly confused by the joke.

Addressing the joke on Monday morning while speaking to Kyle and Jackie O, the Today host shared that even his wife Jasmine mocked him for the joke falling flat.

"Clearly the audience was too old. There really wasn't much laughter. It was one of those totally awkward moments," Stefanovic happily admitted.

“I got back to my seat, and you know, generally our partners support us.... that one went flat. Once I explained [to wife Jasmine].... but as they say, if you explain something, it’s no good.”

Stefanovic also revealed that he checked in with Koch afterwards, who asked him, “Are you making fun of me again?”

“I said, ‘I love you man!’ and he said ‘I love you too, just let me know what it’s going to be beforehand next time’,” he explained.

The KIIS hosts then kept Stefanovic on the line while they called Koch himself.

“I was just caught up in the confusion,” the former Sunrise host told the group live on air, laughing it off.

“I must admit, I’m not [up to date] with cocaine terminology... I was just talking about the famous show [Bump]!”

Sarah Abo reveals what it’s actually like to work with Karl Stefanovic

Sarah Abo has opened up on what it's really like to work alongside Karl Stefanovic.

The veteran breakfast show presenter has a personality and voice that's larger than life, so being able to match his energy has become one of Abo's talents after six months of being a co-host for the Today Show.

The 37-year-old presenter only had good things to say about Stefanovic.

"One thing I will tell you is Karl is an incredible person, an incredible broadcaster," she said.

"That mind of his, it does not stop - I don't know when he finds time to sleep, he's always thinking about the next thing," she added.

She praised her co-hosts ability to understand the core of a story, no matter how complex it is, share it with the viewers in a way that is easy to digest.

"That's something that comes through in all the stories we cover," she said.

"It is incredible to sit alongside somebody who is so experienced and so supportive of me as well, as I'm learning and finding my feet and work my way through this crazy world that is breakfast television.

"I couldn't ask for a better partner working alongside me," she praised her senior.

Her one minor complaint is that Stefanovic's quirky sense of humour can be hard to understand

Although she remains a good sport and pretends to laugh at them.

"I mean sometimes I've gotta pretend to like his jokes which can be a bit awkward, but hey - I know how to laugh," she chuckled.

Image: Today Show

Karl Stefanovic has ripped into the Reserve Bank for their decision to pause interest rates at an all time high.

The Today host blasted their decision to freeze the cash rate at an 11-year high of 4.1 percent, as Aussies continue to struggle through the cost of living crisis.

Karl Stefanovic has accused the Reserve Bank of “not giving a toss” about the millions of Australians struggling to keep their homes amid seemingly endless interest rate rises.

On Thursday, Karl let loose on the RBA, slamming their decision to put Aussies under further financial strain.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by thetodayshow (@thetodayshow)

“They have single-handedly crushed, strangled Australian households,” he said.

“Aussies who go to work, pay their bills, and just made the mistake of wanting to own their own home. "An ugly bum": Karl unleashes on Gladys' ex-lover

Karl Stefanovic and Peter Dutton have joined forced to slam Gladys Berejiklian’s ex, while dismissing the findings of the ICAC report that called out her "corrupt" practices.

The Liberal party leader spoke with Stefanovic as a guest on the Today show, who both called out Daryl Maguire for being “a bum.”

“She’s first-class and what you see in public is what you get in private as well,” Dutton said.

“She’s just a very decent person. She chose a bum basically and he was a bad guy. I think that she has, you know, paid a big price for that. And her integrity is not in question. She’s not a corrupt person."

“And I think she should hold her head high. She had a bad relationship, as everybody does, and I hope that that’s not the defining moment for her because she’s a much better person and we all know that.”

Host Karl Stefanovic then interjected, “Not to kick a man when he’s down, not just a bum, an ugly bum.”

Their comments come after a corruption probe has found Gladys Berejiklian and her former boyfriend engaged in "serious corrupt conduct".

ICAC found Ms Berejiklian breached public trust between 2016 to 2017 by failing to disclose her five-year relationship with Mr Maguire, which the watchdog found could have had the “potential to influence the performance of her public duty”.

Ms Berejiklian spoke out about the findings, saying "Serving the people of NSW was an honour and privilege. At all times I have worked my hardest in the public interest. Nothing in this report demonstrates otherwise."

"Thank you to members of the public for their incredible support. This will sustain me always."

Image credits: Today / Getty Images

“Done with the vaccine”: Karl Stefanovic blasts fifth booster

Karl Stefanovic has once again sparked controversy after declaring he is “done with the vaccine.”

Karl shocked viewers after expressing concerns that the jab could cause “heart issues” as the Australian Technical Advisory Group (ATAGI) updated its vaccine recommendations.

According to the ATAGI, as of February 20, anyone aged 18 and over who has not had the COVID vaccine or has not contracted the virus in the past six months will be eligible to get another shot - opening up a fourth dose for Aussies aged 19-29 and a fifth dose for those 65 and over.

“As you know, I am not a glowing ambassador for more than two shots,” Stefanovic said.

The Today show host then questioned whether another dose would be able to fight new strains of the virus, stating he is aware of people “over the age of 60 who are still incredibly nervous about getting it."

“The other thing that I am concerned about, if I have another dose, is that I may get complications,” he said.

The host’s guest, medical expert Dr Nick Coatsway insisted Australians aged 60 and over “needn’t be” scared of the jab but added that the conceded boosters are only a temporary solution.

“Let’s understand the science, if you get a fifth dose your protection is enhanced for around about 8-12 weeks and then it returns after the fourth dose or the third dose,” Dr Coatsworth said.

The ATAGI has again emphasised the importance of Aussies who are already eligible, including people over 65, to get their booster in 2023 as they remain at high risk of severe disease and death from COVID.

Currently, there is no additional booster available to those 18 and below, with the exception of children aged 5-17 who are at high risk of developing a severe illness.

“Enough is enough”: Karl's crime wave plea after family targeted

A number of Aussies are resorting to hiring their own private security to watch over their properties while they sleep as the country faces a major crime wave.

Within 24 hours, a teenager was stabbed to death in Melbourne’s northwest and three young offenders have been charged over Facebook Marketplace robberies in Queensland.

As the crime problem continues to worsen, Today co-host Karl Stefanovic revealed his own family have been targeted.

“Enough is enough,” he demanded.

"This has happened to me, it's happened to my family, I've had kids come to my house, doing things and I've got them on tape," a disgruntled Stefanovic continued.

"It is only relatively minor offences, but if it is getting to that level for me, it is getting to that level across the country - we keep having to talk about it, keeping saying we've got to do something about it and nothing happens.”

Stefanovic also emphasised the colossal impact these targeted attacks have on families, regardless of whether it’s a home invasion, car theft or robbery on the street.

“Whenever the crime comes to their doorstep, whenever someone breaks into their car, whenever something happens that's close to home, it has a tremendous psychological impact,” he said.

He agreed with authorities discouraging vigilante activities as a solution, however, noted that the problem is only getting worse.

"That's my big concern, that's the big concern for a lot of authorities in various states," he said.

"I don't understand how authorities can't see how significant an impact this is having on the day-to-day life of people, law-abiding citizens at home.

"It's not stopping and that's the problem."

Kochie’s emotional farewell on Sunrise

Sunrise host David Koch bid an emotional farewell to the show in his final episode on Friday morning.

After 21 years on the job and hosting over 5,300 episodes, Kochie received a hero’s welcome when he entered the studio at 7am that morning.

The veteran host teared up as co-host Natalie Barr, newsreader Edwina Bartholomew and sports presenter Mark Beretta greeted him at the desk.

“Thank you for everything. Thank you. Oh dear. Quick, I’ve got to [read] the news,” Koch said, while he wiped away his tears.

Not long after, Kochie confessed that he was distracted by the text messages sent by Nine’s Today Show host, Karl Stefanovic and shared their banter.

“I asked him if he had a Sportsbet booked on me crying on the show, and he said, ‘No, my missus closed my account last year when I bet on the camel races in Dubai,’” he said.

To which co-host Nat Barr quipped: “Well, as we walked in, you were already crying, so someone won some money.”

Later on in the show, former co-host Sam Armytage, who left the show in 2021, made a surprise guest appearance and shared her well-wishes for Kochie.

“This job is so incredibly difficult, and you can’t say it when you’re in the job, because no one wants to hear you complaining. But when you’re not in the job anymore, you can say how hard this is,” she said.

Armytage recalled her own experiences of working at the breakfast TV show before commending Kochie for his resilience and drive.

“There is so much scrutiny. To get up day after day and do this: the resilience, the drive, the ability, the energy to just keep coming in here every day and do that is extraordinary.

“I absolutely salute you. After eight years, I couldn’t do it anymore. 21 I just think it’s extraordinary.”

Both Kochie and Barr sat on the sofa across from Armytage, and her appearance comes days after Kochie addressed the rumours of a feud between him and Armytage.

Mel Doyle, who was Kochie’s co-host from 2002-2013 also made a surprise appearance and shared stories about their humble beginnings.

“Remember when we bet our boss to take us to lunch if we hit 40,000 viewers?” she asked about the program’s early days. Karl Stefanovic sheds light on daughter’s health battle

Karl Stefanovic has shared more details on his daughter Harper’s ongoing health battle, after she was hospitalised again last Thursday.

The incident occurred almost a year after her last health scare, when she was rushed to hospital due to breathing difficulties, and was later on diagnosed with a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

"There's something going around in daycare and she picked up something else," Stefanovic said.

"She had to go to hospital on Thursday night, it was something else entirely, but it's all similar and it just freaks you out as a parent.”

The Today Show host has shared a warning for all parents and opened up on the lingering effects of RSV.

“Almost a year ago, my daughter Harper scared the living daylights out of us. Struggling to breathe, we rushed her to GP. Then to hospital. There, we discovered the scary combination of letters we never heard of before, RSV. It’s a respiratory infection,” he said on the Today Show.

“She was in a lot of pain. Luckily, she’s able to make a full recovery. In the last 12 months more than 27,000 Aussie children have suffered from RSV. It happened to us and it could happen to any parent,” he added, while discussing RSV with Dr Matthew O’Meara, the chief paediatrician at Sydney Children’s Hospital.

Stefanovic revealed that the hardest part was watching his daughter’s health rapidly decline, from something that he thought was just “a normal cold and flu”.

“The one hard thing for us was how quickly Harper went downhill,” he recalled. “It felt like a normal cold and flu. She went downhill. The breathing became laboured and it got worse in a very quick amount of time.”

Both Stefanovic, and his wife Jasmine are committed to raising awareness on RSV.

Jasmine has shared her own recollection of the terrifying incident.

“The first time Karl and I heard the letters RSV was when Harper was in hospital struggling to breathe,” Jasmine said.

“Initially, Harper had the sniffles and a cough, and we assumed she just had a bit of a cold.

“But within hours, she deteriorated; it was alarming to see how hard she was working to breathe, with her little ribs sucking in and tummy pulling up into her chest.”

Although Harper is on the mend, the couple shared that she still has a “lingering wheeze”.

Dr Matthew O’Meara has shared that these viruses are common this time of year and the child will have the same symptoms as a common cold.

However, if it does get worse, these are the things to watch out for:

"It will make them cough or wheeze and find it hard to breathe or young babies will find it hard to feed," he said.

"While we can prevent these with strategies like not sending your kids out when they're sick, washing your hands, washing toys, most of it is managing that illness while your child has already got it.

"If they start to have breathing problems, pull their t-shirt up, look at their chest and see how quickly they're breathing and how much effort they're putting in.

"If you are concerned see your GP or call Health Direct and if it's really bad you should go to hospital."

Images: Nine News
